Balancing Eastern and Western Philosophies in a Reflexive Exploration of Self: Implications for Practice, Teaching and Research.

Yoga Philosophy Alive in Small Business – Meta Chaya Hirschl
I will draw from traditional yogic texts (the Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita) as well as a global re-assessment of success offered by Lynn Twist in The Soul of Money to create a new definition of human nature and how we work in business and community. I will see how the Yoga Sutras identify the meaning of the individual consciousness and how the work, the practice of yoga, is to clarify the vacillations of the mind so that the True Self is radiant like a gemstone, and then to see that radiant gemstone in others. The practice of yoga is particularly experiential and offers many approaches for attaining this oneness, union, i.e. yoga, with Self and others. The Bhagavad Gita, the other seminal text of yoga, offers us at least two lessons in human nature, and how to live. According to the Gita we are to see ourselves in everyone and everything, we are at once individuals and in complete union with all. We are not our roles or our titles or our possessions or even our minds, we are much more than that and we are intrinsically related and must act in the world as agents of change. The Gita also is quite clear that the actions we must all take are without regard to the reward or the consequence. This is not a practice with a goal, is a practice for practice, not for results.

I will explore how I’ve used these key foundations of yoga to inform my business practices and leadership. The goal of yoga, of life, is to see oneself in others as we are all the same. I will give examples for each of these ideas from the Sutras and the Gita and how I’ve gradually learned to implement them in the everyday cauldron of yoga and business. For example, we offer free classes to staff, volunteers and clients of local non-profits whose mission it is to serve the underserved in Albuquerque. Currently participating groups include those who support homeless teenagers, recovering addicts and prostitutes, and healthcare for the homeless.
